#RootsBreakWalls Screenprint & Wheatpaste Workshop

#RootsBreakWalls Screenprint & Wheatpaste Workshop

On July 4, 2019, Another Gulf Is Possible partnered with local Valley artist Josue Ramirez and community members to do something different. We skipped the parades and fireworks and gathered to celebrate our Rio Grande Valley community and culture. This event was open to community members of all ages. Strengthening community spirit helps to breakdown the walls of oppression, and expressing our colorful creativity deepens the appreciation for our cultural connections.

Another Gulf Is Possible hosted a two-day workshop on Wednesday, July 3, in McAllen, TX, and Thursday, July 4 in Brownsville and McAllen, TX called #RootsBreakWalls. The first day of the workshop included messaging, designing, and preparing silkscreens. The second day included screen printing, creating wheat paste, and wheat pasting tactics.

It was an opportunity to brainstorm compelling, creative, and sticky messages for environmental, social, and border justice. The brainstorming sessions led by Josue Ramirez provided participants with a friendly community-inspired environment for locals to discuss and share their experiences with the different topics of injustice we face in the Rio Grande Valley.

Unity and community continued to build as participants enjoyed learning three affordable, easy methods for designing and creating screens for printing t-shirts and posters. The art of making wheat paste from flour, sugar, and water providing additional opportunities for bonding. This adhesive, traditionally used to make pinatas, a cultural favorite, could be used to adhere to color posters and notices to walls. Through creative unity and peaceful communication, we continue to breakdown cultural barriers and obstacles.
